Originally from Plano, Tammy Denison had been a regular at a Collin County self-serve dog wash, and she was surprised to find there was no self-serve dog wash near her new home on the west side of Fort Worth. “My husband told me nobody in Fort Worth would pay to wash their own dogs, but I knew they would!” says Tammy.
Tammy opened Happy K9’s first location on Clifford St. in 2012, outfitting Happy K9 with easy-to-use wash stations and hiring experienced staff. She ensured that the company was involved in the community, working with local charities and animal services to help make a difference in the lives of pets and pet owners. Business thrived! In 2015, Tammy opened Happy K9’s second location on Camp Bowie, near the new ZBonz Dog Park, providing an option for dog owners to clean up after a day of play before returning home.
Tammy’s husband was part of a local police K9 unit, handling a gorgeous German Shepherd named Dar. Dar became the mascot for Happy K9, and although Dar has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge, his legacy lives on. Tammy knows that K9 handlers cannot simply drop off their dogs to groomers; these highly-trained dogs cannot be left with strangers. In honor of the risky work of police K9s and understanding the special requirements for K9s and their handlers, Happy K9 provides free self-services to active and retired police dogs.
Happy K9 Dog Wash has earned respect in their field by providing one-on-one quality care, holding monthly vaccination clinics on site, and offering pet pictures with Santa around the holiday season.
